Couldn't you just have "A Novel" added to the cover?

Thanks for the question, Gabi. Actually, the cover DOES include "A Novel." But, as best as I can tell, the community of historical fiction writers, such as it is, considers the addition of a disclaimer and author's note to constitute best practice. Now that I've done the deed, I find I don't mind playing along. Among other things, it makes me feel like I'm paying a debt of gratitude and respect to the dead people I've turned into characters in my book.
